Not the sharpest knife in the drawer…

As you can see from the picture, we have a cat and a dog. Oliver (the cat) runs the house and is in charge of everything except for feeding himself and cleaning his litter box. Other than that, he owns it. Max (the dog) is just happy to be on the planet. If you have ever read a Garfield cartoon and saw Odie, you are up to speed on Max. At our current house, we don’t have a fenced-in yard so every morning and every night, I take Max for walks after he has eaten. Lately, we’ve been down in the lower 20′s overnight so our walks have become a bit faster but this story is about two very recent walks in which I nearly pee’d my pants while walking my dog. I’m certain the stories were much funnier in person than I will be able to make them but I really got a kick out of these walks.

Last Thursday night, I was walking Max and as we’re heading back to the house, he decides to start sniffing around in one of the storm drains when out of nowhere he gets whacked in the side of the head by a stiff right hook from something long, dark and mysterious. It happened so fast, I almost thought I had imagined it but the way Max jumped up into the air, I knew it was real. I couldn’t see it at first but quickly I realized that a fairly large cat must have decided to curl up on the shelf in the storm drain and Max had disturbed its rest. As soon as it had crushed my dogs cranium, it took off out of the drain and ran into the yard beside us. There was a large green telephone switch about 10 feet off of the street and the cat must have hidden behind it. When Max regained his senses, he took off after the cat at which point, the cat jumped up onto the switch box (about 2 1/2 feet high) and started watching. For FIVE FULL MINUTES, my stupid dog ran all over the place trying to find this cat, never once suspecting that it might have jumped onto the switch box. At first, I tried to pull him away but it became funnier and funnier as time went on. He would run to the drain and sniff around, then run to the corner of the house then between the two houses, then back to the drain. The whole time, this cat is just looking at me. You could tell he was just dying to ask if I had to keep the dog on the lease for his own safety. Finally, my eyes crying and the water on my face freezing cold, I had to drag him two houses before he would forget about the cat.

The very next morning, it’s 22 degrees out and Max and are walking past a house that obviously has not turned off their in-ground sprinkler system. I couldn’t believe the things actually worked but they did and sure enough, there are big patches of ice on the road and in their driveway. I was walking along, mumbling under my breath about the idiots when I notice that Max is running with all of his might but not going anywhere. The sprinkler had soaked the concrete in front of another storm drain and the ice and the angle of the concrete were causing my poor dog to skid into the drain. He must have been doing about 65 or 70 when I noticed and gave him a gentle tug. His feet hit solid asphalt and he traveled 10 feet in less than half a second. I wanted to help him because he looked so frightened but I was doubled over laughing so hard. I tried to pet him but I think this just aggravated him and he ignored me for the rest of the walk.

See, I told you it wouldn’t sound as funny as it actually was but I won’t forget those two walks for a very long time.

Happy anniversary baby, got you on my mind…

18 years. Can you believe it? It’s been a tough journey but I know that it has just made us stronger together. I can’t wait to see what the next 18 have to bring us. I pray for you each and every day and know that God will return you safe and sound to me. And remember:

It takes one good well deep and everflowing
It takes one good well to draw from night and day
Pure and fine it’s yours and mine and it’s always enough
We got one good well overflowing with everlasting love

I love you,
Goodnight.

Is this really a religious issue?

Okay, so lately I’ve had a lot of friends talking about Obama and the abortion issue. As a Catholic, this issue is important to me and I know that the US Conference of Catholic Bishops have made it the number 1 priority for them. I know that many priests, such as this one in South Carolina are taking this issue into the parish and working it hard but it also seems like everyone I talk to seems to think this issue BELONGS to the religious. I just don’t get that!

Look, 35 years ago a law was implemented that made abortion illegal. Lots of people fought against the law but it passed anyway. Can any of us really remember what it was like in 1973? You remember, dads used to sit in the waiting room of the hospital smoking cigarettes and the doctor would come out and tell him whether it was a boy or a girl. We had nowhere near the medical science we have now. We literally have electron microscope video of cells splitting now. We can actually see the sperm fertilize the egg. We KNOW beyond a shadow of a doubt that a human life has started at that moment. Those are the facts and they are indisputable. This information was not concrete in the early 70′s. Oh, doctor’s knew this but they couldn’t show the jury pictures like they can today. Today, no one can say “we just don’t know when life begins”. Scientific proof shows that life begins at conception. An independent life form is living within the mother’s womb. And our laws, founded on inconclusive evidence, allow this independent life form to be murdered and for the murderer to be protected from prosecution. If you don’t believe it, watch the following video clip:

Of course, this is a priest telling the story so I am not really helping my cause of proving this is just as much a secular issue as it is a religious one, but look at the size of the fetus doll in his hands. Only 18 weeks after conception, just over 3 months!!! This is murder of the innocents and our new President-Elect is waiting to sign a bill that will allow this procedure, theoretically, to be performed on any and every baby from conception up to and including delivery! Please, please, please, pray and ACT to keep FOCA and any other pro-abortion bill from passing.

Simon Cowell’s greatest contribution to the world…

So, the story goes that during one season of European Idol (from which American Idol was copied), four singers tried out and were not deemed good enough as solo acts. Simon Cowell contacted them individually and formed the group Il Divo. I have one of their albums and they are a very interesting group. They are from 4 different countries, speak 4 different primary languages and all sing beautifully. Watch the following video and tell me if you don’t agree…

8-(…

Every school day, I spend a little time in our Adoration Chapel and I write a prayer that I read at the end of the school day to a group of parents who meet in the parking lot. If I have mentioned that before I’m sorry but yesterday as I walked out and began talking to them, I told them that my original prayer began “Dear Mary, I am so angry with your Son right now…” At that point, I put my pen down and tried to reason out why I was mad; just what it was that caused me to be not disappointed, but angry.

It dawned on me that I was really just counting on taking the easy way out. I’ve always been pro-life but I have never been as outspoken as I have been this year. There are many reasons for it and the dichotomy of the two candidates certainly helped. But the real reason is that I was kind of hoping that we could elect someone who would fight the fight for me and I could go back to my blissfully ignorant little life. Now I understand that I truly need to fight for pro-life issues because they are worth fighting for, not because they’re a good reason to vote for my candidate. I need to educate myself (and my friends) on how to fight within the political process and I don’t mean just marching down Pennsylvania Avenue once a year.

They have rights too.

We have much to be encouraged about but there is still much to do. FOCA must be stopped and we need to make sure that no ‘consented euthanasia’ laws get placed on the books (yes, it is coming). Finally, I realize that there is another Presidential election in 4 years and everyone is searching for the next Republican to get behind but don’t forget that in 2 years, we’ll have another round of Senate elections and that will be the next chance to impact people who will confirm our Supreme Court Justices.

One last opportunity…

So I began thinking about the ‘Undecided Voter Quiz’ that I gave a few days ago and it dawned on me (since I work in an educational environment) that many people learn in many different ways. Also, some people are so engrossed in their jobs that you can only discuss things with them in the terminology they use day in and day out. So I would like to offer some helpful terminology that will make things easier for you if you happen to run across one or more of these people before the election tomorrow…

As a foundational principal I submit that the Right-To-Life issue is the single most important and divisive one facing our voters. I base this conclusion on the simple premise that ALL of the other issues are theoretical in nature. Experts can be found everywhere to conclude that:

  • Both candidates have offered economic packages that may or may not eliminate the current economic crisis.
  • Both candidates have offered medical care changes that may or may not improve health care in this country (a country by the way, with the best health care system in the world).
  • Both candidates have offered military strategies that may or may not bring the war in Iraq and Afghanistan to a peaceful conclusion.
  • Both candidates have offered plans regarding illegal immigrants that may or may not bring this issue to an acceptable conclusion.
  • And finally, both candidates have shown character (and character flaws) that may or may not make them the right leader for this country at this time.

But the one issue upon which everyone has to agree is that the opinion of the two candidates about right-to-life and ‘when life begins’ is so fundamentally different that it can easily be used to separate the two candidates. So without further ado, I would like to present my ways of helping people from different walks of life determine which Presidential candidate to vote for.

If you have someone who is a technology savant; a programmer, project manager, web designer OR someone who is just highly organized and needs things laid out in an orderly fashion, I give you the decision flowchart:

If you are speaking with someone who would like to take a reasoned approach and to deduce who they should vote for using Deductive Logic, try this:

All humans, once conceived have a right to life.
–You must vote for John McCain.

Embryos do not become a human (and thus do not have rights) until they are fully delivered from the mothers’ womb and the umbilical cord is cut.
–You should vote for Barack Obama.

If you are speaking with a farmer, you might try this approach:
You have planted enough seed to harvest about 16,000 [insert item here] each day but someone comes along each day and cuts down about 4,000 of them.
John McCain wants to stop them from being able to cut any down but Barack Obama wants to make it easier for them to cut down even more.

If you are speaking with a business person, an economist or a banker, this might work:
You were given a loan to open a store and begin selling widgets.
Your business model showed that you have the ability to make and sell about 16,000 widgets each day. At this level, you are able to meet all of your manufacturing costs and still make a modest profit for yourself.
Recently, you have begun losing about 4,000 widgets per day to theft and can no longer meet your bills or pay back your loan.
John McCain wants to stop the thieves from getting any of your widgets.
Barack Obama wants to relax the restrictions on the thieves and allow them to take as many from you as they would like.

If you are speaking with a lawyer or someone in the law enforcement arena, they might respond to:
The laws of the United States of America state that the murder of an innocent human is illegal in all instances.
Today, we have documented scientific proof that a human becomes an autonomous organism immediately following conception.
John McCain would ask the Supreme Court Justices to review this countries abortion laws in light of scientific advances made since its inception.
Barack Obama would immediately sign into law a bill that relaxes virtually all restrictions upon abortion.

And Finally, what about the person who just wants to know the truth about this situation:
There are just under 12,000 children born in the United States of America each day.
There are between 3,000 and 5,000 children aborted in the United States of America each day (because of the laws in place, an accurate count is impossible).
If the Freedom of Choice Act is signed into law, the conservative estimate is that about 7,000 children will be aborted each day; some will only be a day or two away from a normal, natural full-term birth!
John McCain will veto the Freedom of Choice Act if he is presented with it and will ask the Supreme Court to review Roe v. Wade and other Pro-Choice laws that appear to be in opposition to the foundational principles set forth in the Declaration of Independence.
Barack Obama will sign the Freedom of Choice Act if he is presented with it and would legitimize as many abortions as possible.
