So, the story goes that during one season of European Idol (from which American Idol was copied), four singers tried out and were not deemed good enough as solo acts. Simon Cowell contacted them individually and formed the group Il Divo. I have one of their albums and they are a very interesting group. They are from 4 different countries, speak 4 different primary languages and all sing beautifully. Watch the following video and tell me if you don’t agree…

Every school day, I spend a little time in our Adoration Chapel and I write a prayer that I read at the end of the school day to a group of parents who meet in the parking lot. If I have mentioned that before I’m sorry but yesterday as I walked out and began talking to them, I told them that my original prayer began “Dear Mary, I am so angry with your Son right now…” At that point, I put my pen down and tried to reason out why I was mad; just what it was that caused me to be not disappointed, but angry.
It dawned on me that I was really just counting on taking the easy way out. I’ve always been pro-life but I have never been as outspoken as I have been this year. There are many reasons for it and the dichotomy of the two candidates certainly helped. But the real reason is that I was kind of hoping that we could elect someone who would fight the fight for me and I could go back to my blissfully ignorant little life. Now I understand that I truly need to fight for pro-life issues because they are worth fighting for, not because they’re a good reason to vote for my candidate. I need to educate myself (and my friends) on how to fight within the political process and I don’t mean just marching down Pennsylvania Avenue once a year.
We have much to be encouraged about but there is still much to do. FOCA must be stopped and we need to make sure that no ‘consented euthanasia’ laws get placed on the books (yes, it is coming). Finally, I realize that there is another Presidential election in 4 years and everyone is searching for the next Republican to get behind but don’t forget that in 2 years, we’ll have another round of Senate elections and that will be the next chance to impact people who will confirm our Supreme Court Justices.
I’ve not discussed this with you guys before but I am a moderator for an afternoon prayer group that we call the “Parking Lot Prayer Group” at our school. Every school day, I spend a little time in the adoration chapel writing a prayer and then, about 15 minutes before school ends, I invite the parents in the parking lot to stand and pray together. We have jar that we put prayer intentions into and about 25-45 people on average who attend. Anyway, last week one of the parents in the group suggested that we have a day of fasting and prayer in opposition to the Freedom of Choice Act and for the Pro-Life movement. I was able to receive approval for this and we will be holding this special day tomorrow, Wednesday October 29, 2008. We have several events planned including two complete Pro-Life rosaries that will be prayed at 10 AM and 2 PM.
I’m sure that most of you are not in the Woodbridge, VA area but I would invite any of you to participate by offering up a day of fasting and prayer on your own. If you have never fasted in prayer before, let me just say it is one of the most inspiring forms of prayer that I have ever found. The mortification of the body is a special form of prayer that most of the Old Testament prophets, and Jesus Himself used to gain control over evil spirits and show a special form of love to God the Father.
All I can say is WOW! Our priest spoke this weekend about right to life issues and how Catholics are mandated by their claim to be a Catholic to vote for life. He spoke of several things, not just Roe v. Wade and the Freedom of Choice Act but he talked about how we need to stop crisis pregnancy at the source and how we have to do everything in our power to help those in crisis pregnancy situations.
His arguments were very compelling. He spoke about how some laws were inherently bad and we recognized them as such. So, slavery was bad and no reasonably intelligent person would agree today that ‘a person should be allowed to choose whether or not they should own slaves’. He spoke that way in regards to spousal abuse also, so that no reasonably intelligent person would agree that ‘a person should be allowed to choose whether or not they can beat their spouse’. Yet we are willing to engage this same type of conversation about the murder of unborn babies. Like me, he followed the abortion argument to it’s logical conclusion (and then some) which is to say “Where do we stop?” There are some countries that are already arguing for and promoting euthanasia as a means of allowing people to die with ‘dignity’. He asked, “why stop there?”; what about the infirmed?, those born with debilitating diseases?, teenagers that we just can’t control? (he got a chuckle for saying this but I’m not sure that was his intention). One more statement that he made was important I think. He said (to the effect of) that the country is responsible for making laws but it is up to the Church to be a moral compass for the country. People didn’t just start believing slavery was bad, the moral climate of the country got to the point where everyone, not just those deeply involved with their church, began to realize that slavery was bad because all men are created equal. Many people died bringing this to fruition and there are still people out there who believe they are better than others strictly because of their race but that is certainly not the pervasive feeling throughout the country.
I believe that abortion is the same way; most people understand that murder is bad but they allow themselves to be bullied into believing that the unborn are somehow not human. Because they do not fall into the ‘viable’ category they are somehow not human yet if you wait a little while, would they somehow be something else? If you apply the scientific process what would you conclude? Every single time in human history when a human egg and a human sperm have united, they have produced a human child. Not 10%, not 50%, not 99.99999%, but 100% of the time. So the argument moves to ‘when does the sperm and the egg become a child?’ This is the argument I like the most because not too long ago, we did not have any real evidence. Today however we know that immediately after the sperm and the egg unite, the new life begins; the cells start splitting and (though it may not yet look like it) little Tommy or little Janey is on the way.
So what exactly are we left with in this whole Pro-Life argument? I’ll tell you. We are left with those who have the courage to stand up for what is right and have an open, honest debate with the pro-choice people. It’s not our job to try and understand what the other side is saying. It is not our job to agree that sometimes, just maybe sometimes, there is a valid reason for aborting a baby. It is our job to present a reasoned, well thought out argument for the sanctity of all life not matter what state it is in.
What about the safety of the mother? Come on Hobbit, you have to agree that if the doctor says the mother will die delivering this baby, we should be able to abort the baby. NO I DON’T! I cannot give life to anything therefore I should not be willing to take life from anything either. One of the arguments in this case is that “we cannot be sure that the sperm and egg are a life”. If we cannot be sure it is a life, it stands to reason that we cannot be sure it is NOT a life. Which side makes more sense, allowing it to grow and see if it becomes a life or killing it, ensuring that we will never know?
So what can you do? First and foremost, you need to educate yourself on the issue so that you can make an informed case for life. Secondly, you need to vote pro-life. This is not me speaking to you, this is Pope John Paul II speaking in Evangelium Vitae that the single most fundamental right of the human being is the right to life and that no government or power be allowed to create any law which would subvert that right. All Catholics must and all Christians should be compelled to vote for the candidate who will uphold the right to life. This has nothing to do with what you think is correct or, more importantly, what your conscience is telling you; this has to do with fundamental truths and, perhaps, the reason why we are Catholics in the first place. Sometimes, it is important for us to rely on those whose job it is to educate us in our morality. In this case, it is Pope John Paul II; a man who almost all religious leaders considered to be fundamentally grounded in the gospel of Jesus Christ! He is telling us that this one subject is more important than anything else to mankind. It is THE foundational principal upon which all other moral decisions depend! Vote pro-life and then follow up to ensure that your candidates are keeping their word.
This is really one of my favorite campaign ads for this political season. Let’s see, so his economic recovery plan has to do with taxing the people and companies that hire 95% of the private sector employees. Then he’s going to cut government spending while increasing government intervention in our lives. He’s going to force the medical industry to cut costs so that the government can afford to pay our medical costs because he’s going to nationalize medical coverage but he’s going to do this without stopping the litigation that is causing medical costs to skyrocket. Plus, the attorneys who are currently having to sue medical practices and/or insurance companies are now going to be able to sue the federal government. Yep, I’m loving the prospect of an Obama led nation…Obama-Nation…Obamination…
My favorite has to be his stance on life. When George Herbert Walker Bush ran for President, Dennis Miller who then hosted Saturday Night Live’s News segment made the statement that Bush was Anti-Abortion but Pro-Death Penalty; the punch-line was “I guess it’s all in the timing, huh George?” Now, we have a candidate who is Pro-Abortion and Anti-Death Penalty. So let me get this straight, an unborn infant who has done absolutely nothing wrong can be terminated at the convenience of the one who conceived it but a person who willingly and knowingly committed a crime so heinous that our laws would allow them to be put to death should not. Don’t get me wrong, I don’t think we have the right to take anyone’s life and believe that no one, no matter what the cause of their conception, crime they’ve committed, or age (euthanasia) should be put to death in any unnatural way. But hey, if I had to defend one position or the other, I certainly could find it easier to defend Capital Punishment than I could Abortion. Did you hear Katie Couric trying to rope in Sarah Palin with that lame question? “So, you believe that a woman who becomes pregnant because of rape or incest should be forced to carry the baby to term?” Hell yes; or do two wrongs now make a right in Katie’s precious little book? Let’s see, kill the unborn child and then the mother can just go on with her life and the trauma of the rape or incest will just go away like it never happened??? Please! Oh, and the abortion is not going to add any trauma to the poor victim’s life. I wish Sarah’s answer to Katie would have gone something like “Yes, and I believe that it shouldn’t be the law that the elementary school nurse has to call me to give my child an aspirin and yet is legally restricted from calling me before referring her to the abortion clinic.”
One more thing before I step off this soapbox, Whoopee Goldberg used to make millions of dollars selling videos in which she ridiculed men who had a pro-life view. She would walk up to the men and ask them “When was the last time you were pregnant?” Now on “The View”, she asks John McCain if she has to be worried about going back to slavery because of his view on strict interpretation of Constitutional Law. When was Whoopee ever a slave? About the only thing she is a slave to is that tired excuse for a hairstyle she’s been sporting for the last 35 years! Hypocrite! How do you get these jobs? Man I wish more people read my blog; I’m out of here…

Wow, say what you want; spin it if you like to but there is no way to say that Governor Palin didn’t hold her own against Senator Joe Biden. Even the Washington Post found it hard to criticize her performance in the debate; though they did manage to have the style department make derogatory comments about her clothing. I don’t think that Senator Biden did poorly, in fact he did quite well but he was supposed to do quite well, he’s been making political speeches and performing public debates for 35 years! Even a stupid fat hobbit could become proficient at something if he did it for 35 years.
I did love the way that Governor Palin would not allow Senator Biden to dictate what she was going to speak about in her rebuttals. If he even suggested that she hadn’t answered a question, she would purposely change the subject so that he knew he was not going to yank her chain. In fact the only time I think she slipped up was when Senator Biden stated that John McCain had voted against the same military funding bill that Senator Osama oops, Obama did. Her point, as I understood it, was that Senator Obama promised to support the bill and then changed his mind and did not. The question was not who voted for the bill, it was who flip-flopped on voting for the bill and that was Barack Obama.
I will say that some of the “Joe America” stuff (from both candidates) started getting to me after a while. I really don’t care if you identify with me or not, I’m good just knowing that you understand the current plight of working-class America and that you plan to do something about it.
I thought the most interesting comment of the night was when Senator Biden told Governor Palin that Osama bin Laden is hiding in the mountains of Afghanistan. This is the second or third time he’s mentioned this lately and he certainly made it sound like he’d just gotten back from a two week vacation at Osama’s secret retreat. Those are the kinds of statements that really irk me; a Senator from Delaware knows exactly where bin Laden is but nobody in the US Military does (or are they choosing not to kill him)? Last I heard, he was still ‘Undesirable #1′ and President Bush would love to mount his ghutrah on his wall in Crawford, TX. Maybe Senator Biden could march on in to Afghanistan and take care of business for us seeing as how he’s so knowledgeable about his whereabouts.
Oh well, I guess I better stop before I give away any hints as to who I’m voting for this year. I hope you all have a blessed day.
Today is your 15th birthday and I cannot tell you how proud I am of you. Yes, there are things that we could work on together but today is not the day to discuss that. Today is your day. Before long you will be able to get your permit to drive and then the worrying will really begin for me but today is for joy and celebration. Today is for happiness and life.
15 years ago today, God created a spirit, knitted it to a physical body and released you to the care of others (us). There were many times when I was scared that I would fail in God’s trust in me but I’ve persevered because I know that there is no more important job that God has given me than to protect your soul until you are completely responsible for it yourself. I don’t know that I’ve ever said this before but the first time I ever remember your mom and I praying together for something that we both agreed on 100% was when we prayed that God would deliver a healthy, happy baby boy to us. And he did not fail in fulfilling that request.
Your spirit is so strong and burns so hot I sometimes wonder how your body keeps it in without igniting itself. You mom noticed this long before I did of course. She thought it meant that you should be a Priest and she has prayed for that many times. Being a man, and less of a godly man than I should have been, I did not pray for this though many, many nights I have knelt or stood beside your bed and asked God to raise up a fine Catholic woman to be your wife. I now admit though that I believe your mom is right and one day you may find that God calls you to shepherd a part of His flock. If He does, I pray you will have the courage to say yes to Him.
Today, though, you are not a Priest. You are a strapping young lad who is now the tallest one in the household but have a long way to go before the household belongs to you. You are a friend, and a boyfriend, and a soccer player, and an excellent student to boot. When you laugh, it is loud and obnoxious like your father; when you think, it is deep and provoking like your mom. You are truly our son and we love you more than anything save God Himself.
I hope and pray that this day will be special for you and that after you’ve opened your presents and had your party, you remember that God has given you life and that you thank Him for that very special gift.
We love you very much. God Bless You.
It’s still a turd!
My wife’s husband is a turd. I kind of like the guy but really he is. Imagine if you will that you are a woman (for some of you this will not require imagination); you are stationed in a foreign country where women are considered to be one step below dogs on the ladder of life. You are required to drive 20 minutes back and forth to work each day, by yourself, knowing that if you break down or get a flat you will most likely be harassed (if you’re lucky) or harmed (if you’re not). Imagine that a huge terrorist bomb goes off less than a mile from where you are working. A bomb so devastating that you FEEL it in your chair! You pick up the phone and call your husband to let him know you’re okay even before he knows there is a problem and what does he do? He blogs about HIS feelings! What a jerk!
So today, I owe you all an apology but especially my wife. The one whom I love and would give the world for. I’m so sorry that you are having to experience this. People whom you worked with have died or are severely injured. You are scared and alone and I cannot be there to listen or hold you or let you cry on my shoulder. I promised to always be there for you and I cannot. You should probably hate me but you don’t. I should have stopped to ask how you were feeling and if there was anything, anything at all that I could do for you but I didn’t. I’d like to use the excuse that you had to hangup quickly or perhaps that I was so shocked by what I was hearing that I couldn’t think straight but the fact of the matter is that I’m selfish. I was scared of what would happen to me and the kids if you were gone and I thanked God that you were safe but not so much because of your safety but because we would not have to go on without you. What a selfish turd you’ve married. At this very moment I am so glad you are a strong Catholic woman who would never divorce her husband, I’d deserve it.
As you can see, I have had time now to think about what I said and did not say to you when you called. I have had time to rethink my position. I still am scared of losing you but I no longer pray for your safety out of fear of losing you or because I cannot stand the thought of the world without you but because you have placed your life on the line so that others, those back home, can sleep in peace. Maybe not all of us back home are sleeping that way but there are many more that are than aren’t. Please, please, please stay safe. Pray the Canopy Prayer every day, it really works. Know that I am praying for you every hour of the day to come back to us safe and sound. I am constantly asking God to remove your fear and allow you to rest so that you can be at your best. For him to wrap you in the wings of your Guardian Angel and block out anything that would harm you. I know that we are meant to be together and that our love will be enough to get you through this time. I am so thankful for your strengths and your weaknesses. I love you.
Me <3
