Okay, so I don’t write for weeks at a time and now I writing my third post in one sitting…It’s not that I’m A.D.D. it’s just that…oh look, a bunny!

Anyway, if you’re just seeing this one, make sure you get the other two, they’re being published every three hours, kind of like James Patterson only he puts out novels that fast!

Anywho, this is the closest I’ve been to a movie on opening day since Trilogy Tuesday allowed me to see ‘The Return of the King’ two and a half hours before anyone else in the United States got to see it. I guess it opened yesterday and I saw it today. I am not a Trekkie, I’m barely even a geek but I used to enjoy the original TV series and I even liked one or two of the original movies. TNG was okay and I never saw any of the other spin offs like Babylon 5 or anything like that. I was simply excited about seeing a good movie with a lot of special effects and things blowing up in space (don’t get me started on the ‘no oxygen in space for things to be able to blow up’ thing).

Let me just say quickly that this movie is great. Run, don’t walk, and take every member of your family with you. No nudity, only a couple of cuss words, and lots of action packed scenes with a little romance thrown in for good measure. The new Spock and Kirk are completely believable as younger versions of Nimoy and Shatner and there is only one scene where you can actually see the special effects. It’s on the ice planet, when Kirk’s running from the monster with the flower shaped mouth. Trust me, you’ll see it, it’s distracting, but it’s the only time it happens so you’ll be alright.

I really liked Zoe Saldana as the new Uhura but I’ve got to say that the surprise for me was Karl Urban as McCoy. He did a great, great job of totally being the young ‘Bones’. I didn’t even completely realize who it was until halfway through the movie and then I really started paying attention. Karl seemed so one-dimensional in the Lord of the Rings that I just never expected to see him play this kind of role.

Overall, really a movie that it’s worth to get out and see. I may even try to go see it again this weekend though my diet can’t handle another box of popcorn…

Okay, so I’ve been serious all week (in all facets of life father, husband, teacher, technology, religion) so I decided I needed a break and I started flipping through the movie channels. Have any of you ever seen the movie Contact. I know that June Cleaver has because Matthew McConaughey is in it and she is the queen of all things Matthew. But for me, Jodie Foster is in it. Now, any boy who was born in the 60′s and didn’t fall in love with Jodie at one time or another is just a flat out liar. I’ve never, ever thought about shooting the President but I used to wonder what a date with Jodie would be like (long before the press figured out I’m not her type). So anyway, I’m thinking to myself that this would be a good movie to watch since I haven’t seen it in a long time and I remembered enjoying it back then. So I sat right down on the couch with my beer and pretzels and watched the whole movie and man do I have to tell you, this is not one of the best movies that either of these actors has ever done.

Now Matthew is not ever going to be placed in the same category as the great Shakespearean actors but he’s not bad and hey, you get to look at him which, I’M TOLD, is not a bad thing. And then there’s Jodie Foster, she’s been doing this acting thing for a while and she’s got pretty good acting genes and she’s got two Academy Awards and if you’ve ever seen “Nell”, you know she can act. And Tom Skerritt who I love is there but Jiminy Cricket the acting in this movie is atrocious! I’m telling you, if it hadn’t been for the fact that I was spending time with Jodie Foster, I could have turned the TV off and went to bed at any point after the opening scene. I think the only redeeming performance in the movie was David Morse as Jodie’s father. I don’t know that I’ve ever seen this guy do a bad scene and let me tell you, he has had plenty of opportunities. He’s a character actor (like Gene Hackman used to be) who has to do 40 movies to get the money and respect that Matthew gets for showing up at the beach for his morning workout. Look at the list of movies and roles he’s performed and you get the impression he could do almost anything.

So if you really, really, really need something to do one day; find this movie on one of the free channels (no, don’t pay for it) and sit down and watch. Otherwise, there could be grass growing or paint drying somewhere that will get you through that lazy winter afternoon…

Okay, many of you know I am obsessed with Tolkien, Hobbits and the Lord of the Rings but I also have a small fixation on the Harry Potter series as well.  I’ve been waiting, almost patiently, for the release of the trailer for the new movie (for book 6) but began to worry when it didn’t come out by the time the Dark Knight was released.  It was released on my birthday though I didn’t realize it until today.  So, if like me, you are enamored of the HP books/movies, here is the new one.

I’m not sure if I’m encouraged or not since I was not very happy with the Order of the Phoenix movie.
